This is a topic that is often mis-understand and can be complicated depending on who you talk to.

I admit I find it difficult to explain backlinking techniques to beginners, but I am successful most times and believe anyone who wants to learn how to backlink successfully can if they put their minds to it.

There are many ways to get backlinks to your website, so to keep this short and not too confusing I will just talk about some of my favorites.

1. Using forums and blogs: There is a proper and ethical way to do this, and there are ways that will get you banned and result in a waste of your time.

The proper way to do this is to offer legitimate conversation and input in the existing content. No one wants you coming to their site and saying "Hey look here, I have something to sell". administrators can spot this a mile a way and will block you immediately.

I never post in forums or blogs to advertise, it is always my intention to post useful information. So you ask, “what good does that do?” Here is the trick. Always leave a link back to your site in your signature. The other key piece of information to this is to use a good keyword as the link text (a.k.a. anchor text).

Anchor text? Link text? I know I lost you. The link text is the text you see in place of the long http//ww....domain....com string. It is commonly seen as "click here". What ever text you use for your link text needs to be a keyword that you would like search engines to index you under.

For example if you had a bunch of links pointing to your site using the anchor text "click here" you would have a good possibility of ranking high for the keywords "click here", so use keywords that are relevant to your site for example if you have a website about t-shirts you will always want to use link text like, “T-Shirts”, “Men’s T-Shirts”, or “Women’s T-Shirts”, etc...

2. Use software designed to build link pages: This is by far the fastest way and most efficient. I have been using software called SEO Elite for a few years now and it works great. There is a slight learning curve, but it will allow you to add approximately 50 backlinks per day to your site. If you are interested in the software here is a link SEO Elite.

The only draw back to this method is that you tend to go faster and it is easy to get carried away so you end up having less quality backlinks than desired. Quality and Relevance to your website is the key!

That’s all I have time for today, I will pick this back up later and share some other techniques I like to use. Please feel free to post any comments or questions that you may have.

3. Find high ranking sites with good PR (Page Rank) and contact the web master or site owner. PR is a rank that Google gives a website based on it's content and information about the subject in which it is about.

The higher the PR value a website has the better it will benefit you to have a link on it. You could have 100 links coming to your web site from sites with no PR and it would do you very little good. On the other hand if you have as little as 10 links coming from sites with a PR of 4 or better then it would be better than having 100 links from low PR sites.

Usually you can contact these websites through email or a form on their contact page. The more personal the email is, the better chance you will have that they will actually pay attention and give you a link. Most of the time you will want to put a link on your site first as an act of good faith. If they don't reciprocate after a few days, then you can simply delete the link you added for them.

As you can imagine this is a time consuming process, but the rewards are great. To put it in bites size chucks that would be easy to obtain. I would recommend just doing 30 to 40 minutes per day backlinking and after about 2 to 3 months you will see success!
