As a surfer, I've used Google for about 8 years I'd say. Before that, it was Excite untill they were consumed by whoever bought them.

As a newbie developer, I've only messed with Google. I've tried to incoporate most of thier guidlines to my main URL, but have been lazy with the rest of my subdomains. I use the Google sitemap deally bob(sorry I sound like such a nooob, but I really don't know what I'm doing when it comes to this). I read through the guide that Google has about what the spiders/bots look for in code and ajusted my code to what I think complies with their standard. It really just got a bit overwhelming so I havn't messed with it in awhile.

I've looked into MSN(since its the default search engine of IE), but only got as far as submitting my URL to MSN. I really don't even know what that did for me...lol

Any system I've engineered and sold, I allways set IE's hompage to Google before the computer leaves my posession. I've used other search engines, but really just prefer to use Google. It seems to be quicker and the home page isn't cluttered with all the advertisment/banners/ect that tend to slow things down.

In the past I've always said optimize for google and the rest will follow... and I get more hits from MSN and Yahoo because of it. But now I'm wondering if I'm missing anything along the way.

I use google, unless it hangs up or something and I'm in a hurry... then I hope over to yahoo... until I don't get the results I'm looking for then I just back to google to see if they are back up to speed, etc. I might go to yahoo, msn, etc. once every 6 months.

In my experience I have found that even if you have #1 rankings in MSN and Yahoo! You will still get more hits in Google when you're on the second and third page for the same keyword.

So if you are limited on time I would suggest spending the time on the search engine that gets the most use, which is Google. It does appear that MSN and Yahoo! follow close, but I have also seen them be totally different.

In a perfect world it would be nice to have a page optimized for each individual search engine (maybe only the top 5 e.g. MSN, Yahoo!, AltaVista, AOL and Google). I know this can be done, but the whole time issue makes it tough.

Honestly, I don't spend much time worrying about MSN.

In my personal website I always tried to rank in Google and let MSN just follow behind. In doing that I have never had any issues in ranking in MSN. And I have always received a fair amount of traffic from MSN.

As far as clients I have dealt with in this regard, they are always wanting to know about Google more than anyone else as well.

I'd be open to hear what others have to say.
